Sagarlaxmi Project


GLPC Ltd – Livelihood generation under Mission Mangalam by the members of the SakhiMandals (SHGs) in the coastal areas of Gujarat Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI): Technical Assistance in technology transfer for cultivation of seaweeds by the SakhiMandals (SHGs)

Aquagri Processing Pvt Ltd: Chaired by ShriAbhiram Seth, the organization is promoting cultivation of seaweed in Mandapam (Tamilnadu) with assurance of buy-back. Will serve as a strategic partner in the project.


  • Issued Government Resolution for Project SagarLaxmi
  • Signed agreement between CSIR-CSMCRI, Bhavnagar & paid the licence fee for cultivation technology transfer
  • Signed MoU with Aquagri Processing Pvt Ltd for Market Linkage support



Livelihood Generation Self-Employment and economic activity potential for 10,000 persons in the first phase, scalable in subsequent phases Per family income of around Rs. 5000 to 6000/month for the SakhiMandal members Micro-nutrient supplements from Seaweed : Seaweed has high content of Micro-nutrients. This can be very good source of proteins at very low/affordable rates. It can also be used as supplementary food in Anganwadis/Schools after proper field trials and evaluation. This will help in addressing problem of mal-nutrition in the coastal areas.

Salt from Seaweed : Seaweed is also used for making salt with low sodium contents. This product is in great demand for the patients with high BP.

Aqua-Sap : Seaweed liquid sap is obtained in the process of drying, which has high content of bio-nutrients and other minerals like potassium/nitrogen/sodium etc. This can be used as bio-fertilizer. Has very good market potential.

Mission Mangalam Sagarlaxmi Cultivation through SHGs/Sakhimandals

  • Project for cultivation of seaweed (Kappaphycus) is under implementation
  • Pilot project covering beneficiaries from 5 coastal districts
  • Implemented by Gujarat Livelihood Promotion Company Ltd across districts
  • Training will be imparted to beneficiary with support from Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar & Fisheries Department
  • One time input investment per beneficiary comes to Rs 45000/-
  • Net returns per annum is estimated to Rs. 92,165/- by single beneficiary
  • Marketing arrangements is also arranged through private partners
